Description
These handwritten, undated research notes on an unlined note card, titled "Cp. Bear and Deer," contain information about a Crow folk tale, as related in "Myths and Traditions of the Crow Indians," Robert H. Lowie, Anthropological Papers of the American Museum of Natural History, Vol. 25, p. 48. In this story, Old Man Coyote was raised by beavers. He kills two of the children and sticks their heads out of the door.

Handwritten note: At Hallonawa, a little girl and boy are left at home while parents go wood-gathering. Boy follows his parents; rattlesnake takes pity on crying girl and takes her to live with him. They are driven from two hills by rattlesnakes who fear human retaliation. They are allowed to live on third hill, where the girl grows up. Snakes accompany her back to Hallonawa, where they are about to establish a snake fraternity (as Hopis). But…

They are driven from two hills by rattlesnakes who fear human retaliation. They are allowed to live on third hill, where the girl grows up. Snakes accompany her back to Hallonawa, where they are about to establish a snake fraternity (as Hopis). But the Zuni kill the woman and some of the snakes so that the survivors (including her offspring) go the the Hopi and establish the snake dance. Undated. Note in upper right corner reads 'Enter in analysis.'
