Zero Degrees is a remarkable collaboration between four of the world's most respected artists. Moroccan-Flemish Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is well known for his work with Les Ballets C. de la B. while Akram Khan is world renowned for developing his own 'contemporary Kathak' style, winning numerous awards. For Zero Degrees they bring their unique styles together in this spellbinding piece of dance. Mercury Award winning composer/producer Nitin Sawhney adds his own East-meets-West sound with a specially commissioned score played live by four musicians, and Turner Prize winner Antony Gormley has contributed the staging - two life-size casts of the dancers. Zero Degrees explores borders - between countries, cultures and, most importantly, between life and death. It challenges, prompts and inspires, in a seamless fusion of dance styles, music and contemporary art. Show more Show less

An impoverished Chinese couple move to Beijing from their home town in search of a better life. They invest what little they have in a shabby diner and begin a new life. The film follows Zhang's and Xiao's restaurant business over a period of three years. The couple's problems at times reach almost comical proportions. There are no customers, but they continue to make an effort. The couple represents a phenomenon that has become part of everyday life for tens of millions of Chinese. As China follows the global economy, it is the rural residents who used to make their living in state run cooperatives who now find themselves destitute. The large cities are full of illegal job seekers who have no basic security and are harassed by the local police, adding to their troubles. Nevertheless, the diner in Beijing has an essentially warm and optimistic atmosphere. The young couple carries on with their lives, through joy and worry, determined to succeed. Twice a week, Zhou Yu (Gong Li, Farewell My Concubine), a beautiful artisan, takes the train to faraway Chongyang, where she indulges in a torrid affair with Chen Ching (Tony Leung Ka-Fai, The Lover), her poet-lover. United by their passion, he finds in Zhou the ultimate muse, while she believes Chen to be her ideal soul mate. But accompanying Zhou on her long, lonely train rides are two individuals who threaten to derail her romantic idyll: Zhang Qiang (Sun Honglei, The Road Home), a young doctor hopelessly obsessed with her, and Ziu (Li, in a dual role), a mysterious young woman who bares a striking resemblance to Zhou and seems to be following her every move. A passionate tale of one woman's search for perfect love, ZHOU YU'S TRAIN is a sensual evocation of distance and time, reality and imagination, where the only thing that's truly real is what's in one's heart. For Do You See Me - Do I See You, Gijs van der Meer spent three months following construction workers renovating the monumental Maastunnel in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The result is something approaching science fiction, in which the tunnel emerges as a kind of claustrophobic dream space bringing about the pasts, presents, and futures of the men that, piece by piece and wire by wire, rework the tunnel, their bodies, and Rotterdam’s heritage as a city. This documentary provides a personal insight into the plight of Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) under the brutal regime of Mugabe. The filmmaker, Michael Raeburn, was a white Rhodesian who has spent his life chronicling events there. In 1969, he supported African nationalists in their hopes of ending colonial rule under the racist Ian Smith. Raeburn was expelled from his country and wrote a book applauding Mugabe?s socialist vision of the future. In this film, Raeburn details how the liberation movement he once admired has been transformed into a reign of terror. To insure his re-election, Mugabe has tortured and murdered the opposition and triggered agricultural chaos and economic ruin. The land and homes of white farmers have been seized by government supporters and their black farmworkers have been killed. Millions starve as a result of the chaotic land distribution. Zimbabwe had been a model of a post colonial nation and Mugabe had pledged to ensure a place for everybody in this country. Today the optimism of liberation has turned to despair, with rage, riots, killing and starvation rampant throughout the land. And Michael Raeburn has been forced into exile a second time, because of the color of his skin. College Adult Show more Show less
