This often humorous and always entertaining video explores gestures from cultures around the world. While American gestures for such messages as "OK," "Shame on you," and "Crazy" are well-known in this country, gestures from other societies provide fascinating cross-cultural examples of nonverbal communication. A World of Gestures shows people from dozens of countries performing gestures that are by turns powerful, provocative, poignant, subtle -- and sometimes outrageous. The video examines angry gestures, obscene gestures, friendly gestures, warning gestures, the development of gestures in children, gang gestures, secret gestures, and embarrassing gestures. Many types of gestures are illustrated, including those for beauty, sexual behavior, suicide, aggression, and love. The video also examines the meaning and function of gestures as a form of nonverbal communication and studies their origins and emotional significance. Many issues are explored: Why do some cultures have many obscene gestures and others none? How are new gestures created in a society? How do children acquire "fluency" in gestures? A World of Gestures is essential viewing for a wide variety of courses in psychology, sociology, communication, speech, and anthropology. Viewers are guaranteed a greatly enhanced appreciation of cultural diversity and richness -- and of the power of nonverbal communication.

Belief in the power of witchcraft is pervasive and profoundly entrenched in many parts of Africa. In the Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, these matters are taken an extraordinary step further. Thousands of men, women and children are arrested and tried for committing the crime of witchcraft every year. Witchcraft is an enshrined element of their legal system --- formally treated as a crime. The award-winning African journalist Sorious Samura investigates a nation that appears gripped by fear, where persecution for witchcraft is reminiscent of Medieval Europe.Astonishingly, the state plays a key role by arresting and trying the supposed witches. In one neighborhood where witch-hysteria has been hitting fever pitch, Jeanne, an old woman, is accused of witchcraft because her nephew said she used witchcraft over his wife. She is sentenced to three years in prison without a trial. People are tortured to get them to confess, and then may be killed by mobs. Hundreds accused as witches are executed each year. The film goes inside a courtroom where a witch trial is taking place and also visits a prison where men, women and children are confined in insufferable space. An attorney argues that no modern country should include witchcraft as a crime, or mob justice will run rampant. Yet prisoners are often sentenced for five to ten years imprisonment as witches, or even receive the death penalty. College Adult

Legend has it that there was once a beautiful land in China called Li Chang, where lovers never married. They changed partners when they wanted to. But a cruel Chinese emperor changed all that and forbade these relationships. Arranged marriages became the norm and there were many lovers’ suicides. In this fascinating documentary filmed in Mosuo Province near the Tibetan border, we learn about a matriarchal society that seems to echo many aspects of the legendary Li Chang. There are no fathers, husbands or marriages in Mosuo society. Uncles take care of their sisters’ children and act as the fathers of these children. Brothers and sisters live together all their lives in their mothers’ homes. The women do all the work, including physical labor and are the bread-winners in their families. They are expected to establish harmonious households. Women are usually courted by men from miles away, who come for conjugal "visits."This colorful film also goes on to show how change is now coming to Mosuo Province. Mosuo has only been open since 1990. The first CD player and TV set have created a "mini-revolution", with dances and parties being held. The women of the village now go to a market by bus, where they are learning to shop. And the first school opened two years ago. Change is indeed on its way; the Mosuo may lose their traditions. This engaging and innovative documentary explores the common misperceptions and stereotypes of one another shared by young people in the Middle East and the United States. Images of subjugated Middle Eastern women and violent men permeate the American media and similarly, images of superficial and promiscuous American women pervade the worldwide media. A World Without Strangers connects five college-age women from the United States with five from the Middle East in a media-based dialogue that illuminates and challenges cross-cultural misconceptions. The American women — Lauren, Lindsay, Eboni, Thanh, and Danielle — are from diverse backgrounds. Three of the Middle-Eastern women — Zohreh, Mahdieh, and Asal — are Iranian, while Rima and Hala live in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. In the first round of interviews, all ten participants are asked about their stereotypes. What do the American women think of the Middle East and what do the Middle Eastern women think of the United States? Cameras are given to the women so they can each photograph a day in their lives, collecting photos of family, friends, pets, and favorite activities. These photos are then edited into video diaries, which the participants view in a second round of interviews. By sharing their lives and stories, the women begin the process of rejecting their stereotypes and recognizing their commonalities. As Lauren, one of the American women, exclaims at the end of the program, “They’re just like us!” A World Without Strangers powerfully illustrates Quaker activist Gene Knudsen-Hoffman’s incisive comment, “An enemy is someone whose story we don’t know.” The video speaks directly to young people and it will challenge students to think about media images of the Middle East and how those images shape their own perceptions. It will generate discussion in a variety of courses in communication, media studies, multiculturalism, women’s studies, Middle Eastern studies, and international relations. It was produced by Kelly Briley and Hamid Khani for Olive Tree Communications.
