Blake’s memories of everything funny, embarrassing and upsetting about his childhood and teens are interspersed with tender and heartrending scenes in the present, as he struggles to come to terms with his father, and their history of conflict, and learns to accept that one’s parents are not always accountable to their children. Directed by Anand Tucker (Hilary and Jackie), from a screenplay by David Nicholls, adapted from Blake Morrison’s novel of the same name, the film stars Colin Firth, Jim Broadbent, Juliet Stevenson, Gina McKee, Claire Skinner, and Matthew Beard. When Sally Met Selma is the story of a wedding, a war, and a very unlikely reunion. Sally became known as the Angel of Mostar when she rescued ten-year-old Selma and her brother from the war-torn city of Mostar in 1993. The children were severely injured when a mortar exploded near their house and though they both needed surgery, there was only enough anesthetic for one child. Selma insisted that her brother should have it and her arm had to be amputated without anesthetic.

Hearing there were wounded children in desperate need of help, Sally convinced the Croats to lend her an ambulance and crossed the front line under fire. She found the children lying in the basement of a makeshift hospital where the floor was awash with blood. Sally drove the children and their mother to safety and went on to rescue around two hundred wounded children from the besieged city.

This moving documentary is the story of how Sally saved Selma, how they lost each other, and how finally – 17 years later – they were reunited, when Selma invited Sally to be a guest of honour at her wedding in New York.
